Does the Internet Tear Down Communities?

Solidarnosc - Lubin 1982I just returned from speaking on a panel at the Utah Bloggers conference.  One of the questions asked was:

One of the criticisms of the Internet is that it tears down local community ties.  What are  your thought about this?

The panel discussion was wrapping up so I didn't have time to jump in and give my opinion.  The question really surprised me.  I can't think of how the Internet would do that since all of my experience has been that the Internet has been an enabling tool that created low-cost methods of communicating and maintaining relationships.

My extended family of over 100 people, from great-grandparents, to second cousins, keep in touch through YahooGroups, in a group email that we have had since 2000.  There is no way we would have keep in touch to the degree and extent we have otherwise.

I see that forums, myspace, facebook, rss feeds, niche blogs, etc. are all ways at building and maintaining a community.  Even with this event tonight, I was able to share the panel with Phil Windley, Pete Ashdown, Cyndni Tetro, and Phil Burns.  The event was moderated by Ryan Money.  Ryan and Phil were the organizers of this great event and promised something on an even larger scale in six months.  Ryan spoke of the importance of building a community of bloggers and I think he made a great start here.

Looking around at the gathering, I saw people who were part of different online communities such as people that like food or others that like legal research.

 Asparagus and mini-millefeuilles

Others were part of communities that care about the Green Party, or technology, or TabletPCs.   Others were Paul Allen groupies!

I even got to meet the latest member of the Know More Media community, Jeff Jordan, who is writing about Angel Investing at EnablingAngels.com. He was introduced to me by our fearless editor, Easton Ellsworth of BusinessBlogWire.

Dee Taylor asked if the male dominated panel and audience attendance was indicative of the gender mix of the blogosphere.  Dee, just to let you know, Know More Media has a strong group of BlogHers within our community.

Monica Flores - Author of SistersinBiz.com

In response to how to start a blog, Phil Windley points to his great 12 Step Program to Blogging (Step 1 - Hi, I'm Tim and I am a blogger - no, that is a different 12 Step Program!).

Have you become part of a community because of the Internet? If so, what is the community and how has it benefited your life?

Hey Tim! It was great to finally meet you! I loved that I was able to meet so many bloggers that I read all the time. Thanks especially for introducing me to Easton, I love his blog! I agree with your thoughts about the internet building up communities. It's always interesting to meet the people whose words you read all the time. Whether it's from forums, blogs or chats getting to know someone well before meeting them in person totally changes the dynamic of social events like tonight.
I have no idea how this thing is and will change the world but I know it has a tremendous building capacity that has yet to be realized. In September I will be visiting a very good friend in Vienna that I didn't know two months ago. I live in Dallas. Sounds like a great conference.
Very nice write-up of the event. Thanks for mentioning me. The food in that photo does look wonderful. I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you but I will be sure to speak with you at the next one. As for your question for discussion, becoming a member of the food blog community has absolutely changed my life. I'm connected to some of the people I correspond with through our blogs in a way I couldn't possibly be connected to someone just because we live in the same physical location. People who share the same passions are mentally, emotionally, and spiritually connected and the internet allows us to interact in a way that was never before possible. One reason I'm so excited to go to Blogher is to have the chance to meet so many people who work I admire.
Great write-up, Tim. I need to post about this event - it was very fun. I think a lot of us bloggers secretly crave human contact - we're so cooped up in our home offices (or furtively posting when the boss at work is looking away) that we don't often get to meet one another, shake hands and talk in person. Looking forward to the next Utah Bloggers event!
Phil, I think that having an online connection existing first, makes an offline meet-up or conference so much more effective. You already have a level of trust established with that person and it becomes easier to solidify those relationships.
Tanna, as I think about traveling places, I now think - oh I know so and so who lives there, maybe I could meet them. These are people that I would never have any connection with them otherwise.
Kalyn, we are hoping to have some of our women authors attending the BlogHer conference. It sounds like a great event.
Tim - Great comments. I enjoyed your contribution to the panel. The internet is a great way to build community of all forms. It in no way detracts from local communities (except that, as Easton mentions we can get reclusive). I've met other affiliate marketers as a result of my business blog. Most are local. My personal blog has kept me in contact with former roommates, old friends, family, and started interesting conversations on dates, etc. Janet
I was at the conference, and I had a good time. In my experience, the internet builds more communities than it tears down, but during the transition from the BBS scene to the internet, a lot of local communities were, indeed, victims. The BBS scene was great at bringing together local communities, uniting local interest groups, such as Utah Deaf Net, which no longer exists, as far as I know. It took some time and patience, but now, local communities utilize the internet to stay organized, manage resources, and get the word out about events. Recent advances in local search are making it easier to find local interest groups. I no longer think there's any truth to the charge that the internet tears down local communities. In fact, I'm looking forward to my first meeting with the Utah Podcaster's Association. =)
Supprised no one brought up the local network effects that the internet provides. Blogging conference an example.
