A group of techies meet at a mysterious remote ranch in Montana for a week long “Off The Grid” campout to discuss the future of the internet and how to improve it. Cast members include a couple of CEOs, a couple of hard core geeks, some video bloggers, the Professor and MaryAnn (wait – that is a different show!). Robert Scoble is played by Brad Pitt.
Suddenly a freak summer blizzard (caused by Global Warming) closes all access to the ranch and trapped, the group is threatened by several mysteries including a metal hatch buried in the ground, an unseen creature that roams the ranch and the discovery of malevolent inhabitants know as “Accountants”.
(The part about “Off The Grid” and attendees is true. The part about it being a TV Pilot is not.)
I have been at the SES 2006 San Jose conference this week and as always, Danny Sullivan has put on a great show. There is always lots of repeat information, but each day I find that I come away with a handful of new ideas, new tools, or new contacts that I think, “That made the whole trip worthwhile.”
While the week has been beneficial, I am conflicted because I needed to be here, but I wanted to be at the “Off The Grid” campout sponsored by Robert Scoble in Montana. I met Scoble last week as he came through Salt Lake and got to hear a little bit about “Off The Grid.”
Here is how Scoble described what it is:
How cool is that? A bunch of technologists coming together to figure out how to improve the eco-system of the internet. No one is paying them to do this. This is not an assignment from some boss.
What gall, what unbridled optimism, what lunacy to think that a small group of 30+ people could come up with answers as to how to change and improve the internet.
Today, I listened to Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, Inc. (GOOG) tell about how Google constantly is trying to provide tools and services to improve the user experience. They have a pretty good track record in lowering the transaction costs for a user to find relevant information through search.
But, as much as Google will be able to deliver, I believe that even more significant improvements to the web are more likely to come from groups like Scoble has put together this week.
"Off The Grid" is a show I want to keep watching.
