This has been an encouraging week for me. Sometimes it is hard to measure whether or not my efforts are in vain but this week yielded some much needed reassurance.
Recently I discovered a website called Newsvine, a mashup site much like Netscape and Digg (but with a much better interface). For some reason, I experienced a higher level
of interaction with the users and was able to determine pretty quickly the type of articles the users like to read. After submitting part of ThePublishingSpot's interview series with Tony De'Souza, I was welcomed into the arts community by a Newsviner named Ardith. So I decided to "seed" a few more articles from ThePublishingSpot since the first was so well received.
In a true testament to the power of networking, Jason Boog found his way to Newsvine, introduced himself and was subsequently featured in Ardith's Newsvine column as well as given a StubleUpon recommendation that sent quite a bit of traffic to Boog's blog. I noticed something else though: Ardith proved Boog right about how to build a reading community; she is well connected online and her readers must trust her judgment which is why they trusted her enough to stumble to ThePublishingSpot.
My favorite article of the week was Hollywood continues its attack on the consumer. I like when writers give honest opinions, and BizofShowBiz author, Gary Bourgealt delivered a candid and simple look at the movie industry's continuing attempt to control how people watch movies and television. Technology is making it easier for consumers of mass media to decide how and when they want to consume. Bourgealt's analysis caught someone else's eye because when I went to Digg, it was already there.
Be sure to pay attention to the power struggle as technology continues to give more power to the consumer with new media and do not doubt that we may be watching a mass media revolution take place.
