For the past several months, Kimberlee Morrison our Editorial Assistant has written on Know More Media about media news and highlights of the Know More Media network.
If you have read her posts, you probably agree that she is a talented writer. And if you were paying attention in November, you may know that Kimberlee is also a Freedom Writer. She was part of a unique and remarkable experience as a high school student that has spawned a book, The Freedom Writers Diary and now a feature film starring Academy Award winner Hilary Swank. Kimberlee has written about her experience as a Freedom Writer on Know More Media.
Unwittingly in the mid-90's, Kimberlee and her classmates were citizen journalists, a decade before it was a media buzzword. Kimberlee will tell you that when she started in the Freedom Writers class she never expected to be a published author portrayed in a movie. But as we know, her teacher, Erin Gruwell empowered Kimberlee and her classmates to greatness - through their writing and reading literature.
As noted in a previous post, Dan and I were fortunate to be invited to attend an advanced screeening of Freedom Writers with Kimberlee in Long Beach in November. You can read Dan's review here.
I expect that the movie will be a hit for all ages. Its success will not be attributed to a great cast, slick production or a kicking soundtrack - although that is all accurate. The movie simply rings honest and true. I attribute that to the fact that much of the screenplay comes directly from the Freedom Writer's diaries and is read by the characters as a backdrop to much of the movie.
I will go see this movie again tonight. To see the struggle, growth and awakening of these young troubled Freedom Writers is inspiring and moving as is the dedication and commitment of their teacher Erin Gruwell. I invite everyone to go and enjoy the Freedom Writers movie. It opens tonight in theaters across the United States. Kimberlee and I would love to hear your thoughts and impressions so leave a comment. I am sure you will enjoy it.
