For the first time ever, Oprah has decided to endorse a presidential candidate: Barak Obama. Many are curious – including myself – and are asking, will the “Oprah Effect” make Obama president?
Those who have had their products, books or movies endorsed by Oprah are
familiar with the “Oprah Effect”—the [so-called] power to influence or convince people to make a purchase, view a movie or read a book. In order for Oprah to be named one of Forbes 100 most powerful women in the world, this power has to affect more than Oprah’s legions of followers. The “Oprah Effect” was apparent long ago – when she began her book club that, in essence, changed the way US citizens read. Every book selected for Oprah’s Book Club races to the top of practically every list of best sellers, and leads to incomprehensible sales and profit margins for publishers. Some have even credited Oprah with saving the book publishing industry and “getting America reading again.”
Oprah is hosting a fundraiser for Obama in her California ranch home in Santa Barbara this weekend – although she has not yet made a campaign contribution. During a recent appearance on Larry King Live, Oprah admitted that her endorsement is her largest asset – worth more than her personal financial portfolio. That’s questionable. But, with Oprah’s power to influence, the question may not be whether Obama can recover from his fall in the polls but rather when he will recover.
Is Oprah’s influence enough to get Barak Obama elected? Can it get him the democratic nomination? Time will tell.
