The 2007 World Series begins tonight as the heavily favored Boston Red Sox host the streaking Colorado Rockies. Advertisers and publishers heaved a collective sigh of relief when Boston overcame the Cleveland Indians, a team with a much smaller market, to win the American League title.
But sports marketers and sportswriters are wondering if the Rockies' lack of big-name players will spell a fourth consecutive annual TV ratings slide for the baseball championship (broadcast by FOX this year).
What Sports Marketers Can't Control
Much of the Series' marketing potential hinges on tonight's Game 1 at Fenway Park and whether the Rockies' bats can solve the vexing pitches of Boston ace Josh Beckett. If Denver wins, the Series will last at least 5 games, and every game can generate millions in advertising and sales revenue.
What Sports Marketers CAN Control
No matter how boring or exciting the 2007 baseball World Series becomes, marketers must focus on the long-term for best results. What players have the greatest potential in 2008 and beyond? What storylines can carry over to next year? What rivalries can be hyped? Telling the right stories to this year's Series audience is the key to marketing success.
2007 World Series Results - My Prediction
Despite spotting the Red Sox a nearly $100 million payroll advantage, Colorado enters the Series confidently. The Rockies swept Philadelphia and Arizona in the National League playoffs and have won 21 of their last 22 games. (I attended the only one they lost in that stretch, by the way.)
I'm a bit biased - the actual Rockies are visible right now from my living room windows - but I'm gonna run against Rudolph Giuliani:
I say Denver wins it in 5.
