Got Rotten Neighbors? Let Everyone Know on RottenNeighbors.com

If you have bad neighbors or are planning to move and want to avoid bad neighbors, you might want to check out RottenNeighbors.com. This site allows users to report on which neighborhoods are the worst based on the quality of the neighbors.

When I first moved into my apartment, my immediate neighbors (I live in a large complex) were relatively quiet and respectful. Then I got new neighbors with kids who bound down the stairs so hard it shakes the walls, they scream at the crack of dawn and well into the night, make huge messes on our shared porch and refuse to clean up after themselves.

I suppose that when I decide to move a service like RottenNeighbors.com could be helpful.

Our goal is to be an exceptionally smart assistant when you are looking to move into a new neighborhood. We hope that you will be able to find your dream home in your dream neighborhood by using our data and information provided by other users such as yourself.

It will be interesting to see how this site – which already has over 30,000 postings – will affect the real estate industry. The truth is that anywhere you go, there is the possibility that someone in the area will be less than desirable to live near. According to their blog the founders believe that realtors will ever tell you about bad neighbors in a prospective area, so they’ve taken it upon themselves to allow the people to vent about their neighborhood and warn others.

What’s interesting is that the site focuses on collecting negative information about people who live in certain areas. According to ABC news not all of the comments are negative but my guess it that one would be hard pressed to find a good “neighbor review” on the site. Check out some of these comments:rotten_neighbors_LA.gif

Paulina in Redondo Beach:

Ya got an auto mechanic. Ya got a full time barking dog. Ya got 3 teens and their 100 friends out at all hours. Ya got no fewer than 7 cars, 3 personal watercraft, and a company car. Ya got teen drivers that take up 2 spots whenever they park, in a neighborhood that's always been polite. All in all, ya got DELIVERANCE without Burt Reynolds.

AD in Santa Monica:

I hereby dub this apartment complex "the Library" as any noise louder than a whisper is met with consternation from your neighbors. On the occasions that we've had guests over for dinner and chose to eat on our patio, we've had residents bang on their doors, yell "shut up!" through their screen doors, and one non passive-aggressive neighbor ask us to please can it and go inside so he could sleep. This was at 9pm.

T. Hall in Long Beach:

This bad neighbor uses its property to host various events, including the Long Beach Grand Prix, an annual dog show, an annual outdoor Jazz Festival and an annual Gay Pride Festival. Also invites film crews onto its property at 4:30 am to shoot CSI Miami and other TV programs and movies…

While programmer (and the brains behind the RottenNeighbors.com outfit) Bryant Walker acknowledges that there is still some fine tuning to be done, I’d say there are a couple things to be concerned about. For example, most of the reviews I saw seemed to be petty complaints from people who didn’t like their neighbors. There is also the possibility that a high level of rotten neighbor reviews could potentially bring down the property value in certain neighborhoods. The way I see it, this site could end up being a thorn in the real estate industry’s side.

Someone ought to report these two neighbors! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKckQ4REU7M
Although I think petty griping about neighbors isn't the point of the website, I still think the site is useful. Eventually we'll see bigger issues come to light, like domestic abuse or people who let their children run wild. Hopefully communities who find themselves mentioned often will self-police before homeowners find their property values go down.
