Know More Media Review: "In Rainbows," the Voyager, Space Voyages and Fortune's Power 50

There have been very significant business topics circulating the network this week: announcement of Radiohead’s new album (to drop Wednesday), the Verizon Voyager, Fortune’s 50 most powerful businesswomen, and the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik 1 launch. Here’s a recap of what journalists have been saying ….

Radiohead shocked the recording world and made fans extremely happy with theirInTheNews.jpg announcement that they were making their new release, In Rainbows, available first by digital download only on their official website. BizofShowBiz discussed how Radiohead’s going it alone will make record labels nervous, while CustomersAreAlways analyzed how customer loyalty will determine the success of In Rainbows. MarketingBlurb talked about the use of a new marketing strategy, and BrandingPost examined how brands like Radiohead will probably do better without suits hindering their progress and constantly wielding power over them.

Fortune Magazine released the names of yet another list of business powerhouses: the 50 most powerful business women in the US. MarketingBlurb expressed dismay at the continued lack of salary equity between the women on the list and men in comparable positions; GrowYourFunds highlighted the reasons Indra Nooyi topped the list for the second year in a row; WorkFromHomeMomma insightfully pointed out that quite a few of the companies on the list supported WAHMs, while BizofShowBiz took a different approach by highlighting Oprah as one of Forbe’s richest celebrities. (coincidently she was also one of Fortune’s 50 most powerful businesswomen as well as one of Forbe’s most powerful women in the world).

The announcement of the Verizon’s (NYSE:VZ) LG Voyager got lots of people buzzing about the possibility of this new smart phone being an Apple (NASDAQ:APPL) iPhone killer. Although BizToolbelt thinks it’s possible for the Voyager to put a dent in iPhone sales, BrandingPost begs to differ. ModernMagellans wondered if the Voyager was an example of innovation or imitation and MarketingBlurb discussed the ways the Voyager could become competition for the iPhone.

As I mentioned before, Thursday was the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik launch. WorkFromHomeMomma reflected on how business has changed and TheAlphaMarketer discussed the importance of being first. According to BrandingPost the Sputnik launch begat the Silicon Valley technology boom and BPOTiger discussed the launch in relation to product innovation.

Great wrap up! Whew! This has been a busy week, hasn't it?
Thanks Lara, I hope I didn't miss anything important. If I did I suppose the excuse that I can't always cover everything in one summary is pretty valid on weeks like this one. :-)
Great job, Kimberlee! Thanks for this very helpful review.
Great ideas Kimberlee and all. Thanks! Not sure I got a link from KMM yet -- but I too wrote on this suggested topic on Oct 3rd, (and linked back as was suggested -- from the perspective of women in math and technology and got the post syndicated at Reuters and USAToday. It's at http://www.brainbasedbusiness.com/2007/10/why_women_avoid_math_and_scien.html Hope it's the brain based view:-) from another lens:-) Keep those terrific topics flying! Ellen
