Know More Media Review: Mergers, Aquisitions, Strikes and Nobel Prizes

In case you missed out on any of this week’s news, here is your chance to get caught up.

The merger between Molson Coors Brewing Co. (NYSE:TAP) and SABMiller plcmiller_coors_071009_ms.jpg (LON: SAB) sparked some interesting discussion, with almost everyone noting it was a play to compete with Anheuser-Bush (NYSE:BUD). While BrandingPost doubts that the joint forces of Miller and Coors will not Anheuser-Bush’s market shares, MarketingBlurb thinks the merger makes sense and should be successful.

More Miller-Coors merger news:

A second United Auto Workers (UAW) strike in less than a month also prompted dialogue. Before the strike even took place, AutoMill let us know that it was looming; RisingSunofNihon and PanAsianBiz examined how the UAW Chrysler strike benefited Asian carmakers and Business.KnowMoreMedia discussed the difference between the Chrysler strike and the General Motors (GM) strike a few weeks ago. According to Manager’s Realm, although an agreement was reached quickly, Chrysler was in a stronger position than GM was.

On the lighter side, the recent launch of RottenNeighbor.com got a bit of attention. Now we can check out the neighbors before we move into a neighborhood. OfficeStuffer reflected on a recent move and suggested using RottenNeighbors.com to find the right location for your home office; CustomersAreAlways expressed hope for a similar database for rotten co-workers in the future; for TheAlphaMarketer the site left some things to be desired; and according to PropertyMaven RottenNeighbors.com may end up being a good real estate resource.

Yesterday the big buzz was all about two new Nobel Prize winners: Doris Lessing and Al Gore. TheBizofKnowledge thinks Gore should have received the IgNobel Prize; for TheDemoMemo it was time to celebrate. TheAlphaMarketer and Manager’s Realm used the Doris Lessing’s award as a launching point to discuss creating meaningful awards for employees; ThePublishingSpot applied Lessing as an example of a writer who perservered and whose work was long overdue for recognition.

In what could be considered a coup for new media and citizen journalists, newsvine.jpg Newsvine was acquired by MSNBC. ThePublishingSpot celebrated on Monday instead of celebrating Columbus and TheAlphaMarketer wondered if Newsvine Co-Founder Mike Davidson’s ideas are too mainstream media oriented. Internally, Newsvine’s other founder Calvin Tang made an effort to quell concerns about the company’s future and what the acquisition means to the community. Most of the community members agree that this is a chance to add to the legitimacy of citizen journalism by producing high quality articles.
