Verizon Voyager Phone: Apple iPhone Rival Announced

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) has announced the new Verizon Voyager cell phone, manufactured by LG and due to launch in the U.S. by late November.  The Voyager is being widely hailed as the most significant contender to the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone, which runs on the AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) network.  In this article, you'll see a video review of the Voyager, several comparisons between the Voyager and iPhone handsets, and links to several news articles discussing the Voyager.

Verizon LG Voyager Features

The new Voyager LG handset offers the following:

- High-speed EVDO wireless Web access on the 3G network - iPhone doesn't have this
- QWERTY keyboard inside - iPhone doesn't have this

- Large touch screen with vibration feedback
- Fully enabled HTML Web browser
- Second screen inside
- Built-in 2-megapixel camera with video capture
- 8 GB memory microSD expansion slot
- V CAST Music, Video and Mobile TV
- Plays MP3, WMA and unprotected AAC music files

Verizon Voyager Video Review

This YouTube video by phonescoop offers a good hands-on Verizon Voyager review

As you can see in the video, the Voyager offers an unprecedented combination of cell phone features.

Voyager vs iPhone Comparisons

Stephen Schleicher at SciFi.com says the Voyager's biggest advantage over the Apple iPhone is its faster Internet access.  Like Stephen, I doubt Verizon's chief marketing officer Mike Lanman's assertion that the Voyager "will kill the iPhone."

Engadget's Paul Miller agrees: "A couple of [the four new Verizon phones] might divert a few iPhone dollars from archrival AT&T" (emphasis mine).

Alex Ion at BizToolbelt lists four reasons the Voyager vs iPhone debate could tip in the Voyager's favor and thinks Voyager will reduce iPhone sales.

Verizon Wireless says the Voyager phone will initially cost less than $400. The iPhone currently retails for $399, $200 less than at its June launch.

Too bad the Verizon PolicyBlog, the only Verizon corporate blog of which I am aware, doesn't mention the new Verizon phones.  As a corporate blogging fan, I wish Verizon would weigh in more conversationally on its website.

Four New Verizon Phones

Intomobile reports that Verizon is releasing three other handsets concurrently with the Voyager - namely, Juke, Pearl and Venus.  Juke and Venus, like Voyager, are new handsets, while Pearl is an existing line experiencing an upgrade.  Of these, only the Voyager boasts a touchscreen.

New Cell Phones More Powerful Than Ever

Like the iPhone, the Voyager represents a new generation of cell phones able to perform most or all of the common tasks previously left to several separate devices like laptops, digital cameras, PDAs and phones.  Thanks to increasing wireless Web availability and speed, this emerging wave is sure to affect the way millions of people across the globe work, play and even think.

Verizon Voyager News

Yahoo! News and CNNMoney offer good coverage of the new Voyager phone.

What Do You Think of the Voyager?

What do you think?  Will the Verizon Voyager sell better than the Apple iPhone?  I say no way Jose, but it nonetheless should attract a sizable chunk of folks who yearn for a QWERTY keyboard and faster Web connectivity.

Disclosure: I use Verizon Wireless for my cell phone service.  I wish the bill were lower, but the service is fine.

» Voyager Cell Phone vs iPhone from CustomersAreAlways
Just yesterday I was talking about how Verizon wanted to step up their level of customer service...Then today I find out that they've come out with the Voyager cell phone that is supposed to rival the iPhone.  The LG Voyager... [Read More]

I definitely don't think the Voyager will be an iPhone killer, however I do think it will give others who prefer Verizon to AT&T a comparable phone. I think Verizon is too expensive for what you go and love my T-Mobile customer service although the coverage is not as good as Verizon. The truth is the Voyager is just another option and in the end it's success is dependant on customer loyalty and preferences.
I switched from T-Mobile to Verizon several months ago for the better coverage, but I do miss T-Mobile's excellent customer service. It'll be interesting to see how much of a dent the Voyager will make, if any, in the iPhone's holiday sales this year. Thanks for the comment K!
Is the voyager GSM capable like the IPhone? Will it synch like the iphone? Will it support GPS? I currently have a Samsung i830 (verizon) and would switch imediately if the voyager would do the above.
Any word on its Voice Mail features (visual voice mail)? As much as I hope the Voyager mimics this new technology, I don't think it will because Verizon is always slow on the draw when it comes to hi-tech features.
I have friends who have the iPhone and hate it. Buggy and slow. Verizon picked the right time to compete... here come the holidays and we'll see how sales compare! I signed up to be notified immediately when the Verizon Voyager is on sale at: Verizon Voyager Review - hopefully I'm one of the first to get one! I wonder if the rush will be as big, or close to, the iPhone craze? I guess time will tell...
Michael, I think so. Bootleg, I don't know - but I agree that Apple's got the definite software advantage over Verizon.
haha. Oh boy ok to start off it looks cheap and plastic. The interface of the voyager is nowhere close to comparable with the iPhone. The iPhone with REAL internet not a phone's version of the internet. If you've ever used an iPhone at first you say to yourself wow this is cool, then you try and type on it and you think its incredibly hard. I takes about a week to get used to and then you'll be able to txt/type faster than you've ever been able too. The voyager doesnt have a sleek, sexy design and the additional screen and keypad are pointless. Having a hinge just makes the voyager more vulnerable to breaking. Once again Cheap, Plastic, Overrated, probably overpriced, not sexy. Posted by my iPhone Chris
i phone rocks
I know a lot of people who have the iPhone, even some whose iPhones got bricked by the latest update, and while they may hate AT&T I have to yet come across someone who wasn't absolutely in love with the iPhone. I guess some people have a lot of iPhone-hating friends (co-workers in Verizon?) but most people don't have that rare privilege. People who diss the iPhone are likely not owners of iPhone. The tired 3G vs EDGE argument is worn and personally I'd pick the network that's more likely to be available than almost insignificantly faster (when compared with WiFi speeds). Wasn't there a power hogging issue to deal with on 3G hardware? Just the fact that people who flee at the sign of a traditional smartphone, are using nearly every feature on the iPhone, testifies to its success and potential. OK, I do have a wishlist for the iPhone but I am completely hooked. Not only can I do cool stuff with it, I can even easily make a phone call. Unlike other phones I've had, I haven't had to RTFM to figure out how to call or look up someone. That alone is a selling point. It's all gravy from there. Mike Lanman can be as positive as he wants to be, but "iPhone Killer" is such a stretch he needs to get in line behind Sony, maker of several generations of would-be iPod killers. Maybe also have lunch with Ed Colligan and see how crow is eaten.
Next year Google's phone... the gPhone... will destroy the iPhone AND the Verizon Voyager so this is short lived to say the least. But good luck Verizon.
Well first of i would like to say that Verizon gives the best customer service and coverage than any other company..With At&t u can hear urself in the background u got a stupid echo (thats so cheap and bootleg) All T-Mobile has is nice phones, period...With Sprint you hear every other word the person is saying but they got nice phones...And verizon prices are not expensive..SO what if Verizon aint got the nicest phones, they got the most customers..N i think the Iphone is a piece of crap because its Internet service is slow and what kind of phone doesnt have a keypad??? How retarded is that and who would pay $499 for a cellphone that has bad coverage,,,slow internet,,and horrible customer service? Ok wow rollover minutes Yipeee...it aint that serious. Verizon Voyager will kill the Iphone anyday..End of conversation
Way too early to tell if this is a valid competitor to the iPhone. The video shows there's a calendar, but how's its user interface? How well does it synchronize with the host computer? Does it support Macs at all, or is this another PC-only phone? How's the email client? How good is the web browser, or the photo-viewing app? Really, all the comments about how this will kill or be killed by the iPhone are rubbish. Until we get a real in-depth look at the phone's features, there's no way to tell. One thing is certain, however: the competition will make the next generation of phones even better.
I used to be a Verizon customer and switched to AT&T. I've had every service but the Helio (dumb phone service) and I got to say that Verizon has the best service. AT&T isn't bad but it isn't great when it comes to service. Sure they have slower internet speed and yea they don't support 3rd party software with limited restrictions. When I heard about the Voyager and saw it myself, I was almost about to switch back to Verizon but after further research, I decided to stay with the iPhone. If you really think about it, the Voyager is just a BIGGER version of the enV with a touch screen on the front! Even the reviewer said its keyboard looks just like the enV. Also have you ever noticed that the Venus is another replacement to the failed Chocolate? Some reviewers said it is the replacement to the Chocolate (do the research and you'll see why). The Juke is just a slim down version of the Helio phone (that quick slider Helio has). These "new" phones that are coming out are quickly and easily related to the current phones that are out in the market. The huge difference is that now they are integrating with touch screen. They pretty much slapped a touch screen on their current phone with updated interface. Going back to the Voyager, it’s NOT a smart phone which means you have to pay extra a month for the GPS, web browser, Vcast, and anything else that the regular plan doesn't include. One major difference between the iPhone and the Voyager is that the iPhone is software upgradable while the Voyager is left with the current verion of the software with only able to download add-ons. Which brings out that the iPhone can always send an update to have the iPhone to receive 3rd party software, fix bugs, add software (current did with iTunes) and many more. Also the iPhone has a built in 8GB HDD while the Voyager can handle up to 8GB, you’ll have to spend minimum of $100+ to get a SM card so you’re still paying just as much as the iPhone. $59.99 is the starting rate with AT&T which includes 450 anytime minutes, unlimited data, visual voice, 200 SMS messages, 5000 nights and weekends, rollover minutes and free mobile to mobile and Verizon starts with $79.99 which includes 450 anytime minutes, free mobile to mobile, BASIC voice mail, nights and weekends, but no rollover minutes, no visual voice, no 200 free SMS and the phone can’t make international calls because Verizon isn’t compatible in other countries. But like I said it’s not a smart phone so it’s $39.99 + extra to have every function to work on the Voyager. I’m on the $79.99 plan which upgrades my plans to 900 anytime, unlimited nights and weekends which at that rate Verizon will have other then the extra 450 minutes. This is what I’ve researched and it’s my opinion. I don’t hate Verizon or their Voyager but I don’t hate AT&T’s iPhone either. There are pros and cons to both service and phones and no one really will know which will come out the best yet. I wish Verizon didn’t turn down Apple’s offer which they were to first company to make a deal with the iPhone (it’s complicated and that’s another story). Some will go for looks, design, and killer app. And others will go for the service. It’s what you think is more important that will eventually make the final decision. I might have been writing more favor to the iPhone cause the frustration of the ignorance of people who is even trying to compare a “cell phone” with a “smart phone” and some of them don’t even know what the iPhone is capable of and all you hear is I heard it from a friend or I think this and I think that. Let’s just give it some time and see what will happen next.
Couple of other things I left out and sorry for the spelling and grammar, One example about the upgrade compatibility iPhone has is that it can now use your purchased songs from iTunes into ringtones which no other provider offers and to get technical, they have an easy to use editing tool (in iTunes) where you can set the beginning and the end of a song. $0.99 you can make a ringtone that you've previously purchased from iTunes or for $1.98, you can get the whole song and make it into a ringtone! This is the major advantage of the software upgrade iPhone has and can be modified anytime they want and has done so and will be making more changes with free software updates. Who knows, they might just add games into the next upgrade! I've also heard rumors from AT&T that they are building a better satellite and towers for better service and more coverage but its a rumor so don't quote me on this.
***quote Posted by: Easton Ellsworth "additional screen and keypad are pointless. Having a hinge just makes the voyager more vulnerable to breaking." ***Thats about the dumbest thing I've heard in a long while. Vulnerable to breaking? I have a LG V (vx9800)I dropped many times and its still works, my sister dropped her Iphone and the screen shattered into 1000 pieces. ***What you said makes no sense. A keypad, POINTLESS??? What are you on. A keyboard is better for many reasons, and the key word is CHOICE!! You can "CHOOSE" to use the touch screen or a keyboard with the Voyager, with the Iphone your stuck with no choice. What your saying is like saying; basic cable is better that premium cable because your not confused by all those extra channels.
Hi I have seen your site which that a good & impressive site, Zoekt u de goedkoopste GSM abonnementen in combinatie met een mobiele telefoon?! Hier vindt u een overzicht van de meest populaire GSM abonnement aanbiedingen van dit moment. GSM abonnement aanbieding
@ Easton Ellsworth the voyager also has a full html browzer as well and the internet from verizon is 20x faster than the POS internet the iphone has not to mention the voyager has live TV also the voyager is much more sturdy and the hinge wont make it any more vulnerable to breakage and is said to be $200 with a contract however i do like the iphone's icon look more; as for the the actual phone design i would say their equal (however the keypad and extra screen inside makes it a bit more smexy)
I've talked to people who have already played with the phone, and they're telling me it's definitely going to be an iPhone killer. The feature set is just so much better: http://comparati.com/890-LG-Voyager-vs-iPhone and out of 200+ votes, almost 75% are in favor of the Voyager. I think that says something.
Honestly, Voyager will not be able to compete with iPhone.. QWERTY on a touchscreen phone makes no sense. Also, iPhone user experience is amazing. HOWEVER, I chose Verizon over AT&T 5 years ago and I'm sticking with them just because they have much better reception and quality of service. CDMA is a superior technology and EV-DO is the fastest connection out there. Having a great phone is important to some, but having superior service is essential to all.
Im going to getting this phone. I was going to get the I-Phone but my friend who has one told me not to bother. He dropped his once and it broke. He got a new one and he dropped it again, and this time the screen cracked. He's going to get rid of it soon. I think the I-phone is to delicate for me. I drop my phone to much to get the I-Phone. Plus I already use Verizon, and this phone looks sick.
So far the consensus here seems to be that the Voyager is a strong alternative to - or perhaps even a better option than - the iPhone. Who else wants to chime in? Any Apple fans out there care to defend the iPhone?

CDMA is a superior technology and EV-DO is the fastest connection out there. Having a great phone is important to some, but having superior service I have verizon right now. The service is good or bad depending on where you live. I went with verizon because of the customer service. But can not wait for my contract to finish out. For the past 1 year and 7 months I have had crappy service. It is very sketchy where I live. Any where else in the area it is great. I was told by verizon that I live right next to a tower and I should be getting great service. My niece and her husband work at verizon and love the coming of the Voyager. They said it was better than the iphone, but that like the service is up to the person. In March I will be getting an iphone and I can't wait. Like a previous poster said, the iphone is updated but the voyager can not be. As for the fragility of the iphone...I have heard that it breaks easily but then again I have heard it was sturdy (by people using the iphone). So I guess it is just about what you as a consumer would prefer.
Here is a link that has a lot more photos and review: http://www.alarmpress.com/1660/music-news/verizon-voyager-review/#more-1660
quite honestly i just got the SAMSUNG I 760 great phone, internet is fine, windows 6.o & has a classic keypad with a touchscreen at the same time ! looks great, service AMAZING, verizon rocks thats all i have to say !!
I have an iPhone and its better because the voyager has so little main applications and you have to go through many to get to one thing. IPHONE IS BETTER
