The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall of "a limited number of" Quaker Aunt Jemima Pancake and Waffle Mix products due to a risk of salmonella contamination.
5 good things about the way Quaker is handling the recall:
1. Quaker's official Jemima recall page shares a phone number that anyone can call to talk to a company rep.
2. Quaker did a good job of downplaying the magnitude of the recall, referring to it as a "small quantity" and denying that any other Quaker products were affected.
3. The exact product codes and expiration dates of the affected products appear at the official recall info page.
4. The release explains what salmonella is and how it can impact human health.
5. AuntJemima.com currently displays a message at the very top explaining the recall and linking to the offical info page.
Some of the affected product may have been shipped to stores in Colorado, where I live. Here's the one thing I would love for Quaker to do:
Host an online conversation about the recall. A blog or a forum would be almost instantaneous to set up, and the benefit could be tremendous. So many worried people would be able to visit and share their concerns about the recall and their appreciation for Quaker's timely communication.
Then again, my answer to so many corporate communications and branding problems is a good business blog.
What about you? Do you think Quaker is handling this Aunt Jemima recall appropriately?
